It is one of the most beautiful places in Porto and some say it
is the lungs of the city. The garden was designed at the end of the 19th
century by the architect Emille David. The name, Crystal Palace, is
attributed by the building built on
site, around the same time, but that was later destroyed in 1956, and replaced
by Rosa Mota Pavilion.
The garden has 8 acres, and i tis constituted by three different
areas: the romantic gardens, Quinta da Macieirinha (Little Apple Tree Estate)
and Quinta Tait (Tait Estate).
In the park itself you can find exotic plants, roses, fountains,
ponds, animals, statues, water mirrors, avenues, concerts’ space (Acoustic
Shell), children’s playground, viewpoints and a chapel.
On site there is the Pavilhao Rosa Mota, host of sport’s and
cultural events, Almeida Garret Library, and other equipments. In this gardeny
set we highlight the Feeilngs Garden, that offers a great panoramic view of te
river.
This is, without a shadpw of doubt, the ideal place to wander
away from the city chaos. The gardens are located on Rua D. Manuel II. It opens
at 8 a.m and closes at 9 p.m. (Summer) or at 7 p.m. (Winter). The entrance is
free.
É um dos mais belos locais do Porto e há quem se refira a ele
como o pulmão da cidade. O Jardim foi projectado no final do séc. XIX pelo
arquitecto Emille David. O nome Palácio de Cristal deve-se a um edifico
construído naquele local, na mesma altura, mas que viria a der destruído em
1956, tendo sido substituído pelo Pavilhão Rosa Mota.
O jardim, que tem oito hectares de área, é formado por três
zonas: os jardins românticos, a Quinta da Macieirinha e a Quinta Tait.
Dentro do parque encontras plantas exóticas, roseirais, fontes,
lagos, animais, estátuas, espelhos de água, avenidas, espaço para concertos
(Concha Acústica), espaço infantil, miradouros e uma capela.
O seu interior alberga ainda o Pavilhão Rosa Mota, palco de
eventos desportivos e culturais, a Biblioteca Almeida Garrett, entre outros
equipamentos. Neste conjunto ajardinado merece destaque o Jardim dos
Sentimentos, a oferecer uma excelente panorâmica sobre o rio Douro.
Este é, sem dúvida, o local ideal para passeares longe da
agitação da cidade. Os jardins do Palácio de Cristal situam-se na Rua D. Manuel
II. Estão abertos das 8h00 ás 21h00 (Verão) e das 8h00 ás 19h00 (Inverno). A
entrada é gratuita.
